Liesel Zink showcased The Stance as part of the APAM 2016 Official Program.

“APAM provided a unique opportunity for me to share my work with the broader Australian and International Arts community. Beyond the exciting presentation opportunities this provided for The Stance, it also gave me the chance to forge new relationships with likeminded organisations, artists and friends that I will be connecting with and working alongside far into the future”

Since APAM 2016, Liesel Zink has locked in and toured The Stance to:

  • TAS, Australia: Junction Arts Festival, 2016
  • TAS, Australia: Salamanca Moves Festival, 2016
  • NSW, Australia: Liveworks Festival of Experimental Art, 2016
  • Ansan, South Korea: Ansan Street Arts Festival, 2017
  • Budapest, Hungary: Sziget Festival, 2017

The Stance by Liesel Zink is a site-specific dance and sound work that is created, rehearsed and performed in public space investigating the choreography of bodies in protest.

Drawing from the history of protest in the site in which it is created and responding to recent acts of worldwide collective action, Liesel works with nine local dancers to explore alternate modes of protest while prompting audiences and passers-by to consider the politics of mass movement and the ownership and control of what is considered to be public property.

Live original sound composition (transmitted via FM radio) by Mike Willmett will be free and easily accessible via wireless headphones providing audiences and passers-by with an intimate viewing experience. The soundscape uniquely contributes to the purpose and power of the movement while transforming a familiar urban space into a world of complex noise and dance.

Each different version of The Stance is unique to the city that it is developed and presented in; showcasing local dancers and interweaving the politics and history of the presentation site into the movement and sound.

Liesel Zink is a Brisbane based choreographer interested in politics and social psychology. She has a national and international practice that spans across dance, theatre and live arts.

As an independent she creates large scale movement works in densely populated spaces, weaving in and out of pedestrian traffic and blurring the line between social experimentation and performance. Her most notable public spaces works include  ‘The Stance’ (performed in South Korea, Hungary and cities around Australia) and award-winning work ‘fifteen’ (Next Wave VIC & Brisbane Festival QLD 2012).

Liesel has been commissioned to choreograph works for dance works for Australian contemporary dance companies including Tasdance, Expressions Dance Company, LINK Dance Company and Artslink QLD youth touring program.

Liesel performs with Polytoxic Dance Company and produces events in her local arts community. She has been an associate artist of La Boite Theatre Company, EDC and Advising Panel for Backbone Youth Arts and The Angry Mime.
