If you're interested in Indigenous Australian music, theatre and dance, then be sure and check out the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Arts Board's (ATSIAB) booth. ATSIAB is the area within the Australia Council responsible for assisting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to claim, control and enhance their cultural heritage through the arts. ATSIAB supports the restoration, preservation, development and promotion of traditional cultural practices, as well as the generation of new forms of artistic expression among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in urban and country areas across all art forms, with a large emphasis on the performing arts. Indigenous performing artists and arts organisations play a significant role in fulfilling the objectives of the ATSIAB, and those that have been supported include dance groups like the internationally renowned Bangarra Dance Theatre, the National Aboriginal and Islander Skills Development Association and the National Aboriginal Dance Council. Theatre companies like Ilbijerri Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Theatre Cooperative, Yirra Yaakin Noongar Theatre and Kooemba Jdarra Indigenous Performing Arts have also enjoyed support from ATSIAB. While music organisations like Songlines Music Aboriginal Corporation, Broome Musicians Aboriginal Corporation and Gadigal Information Services / Koori Radio, along with numerous individual musicians, have received support from ATSIAB To check out the websites, CD-ROMS, videos and other promotional material of Australia's top Indigenous performing arts organisations and artists, visit the Indigenous Arts booth where ATSIAB staff will be onsite to assist you with all the relevant contacts.
