One of Australia's most prominent performing arts organisations, Sydney
Dance Company is also one of its busiest touring dance companies. Led
by Artistic Director and resident choreographer Graeme Murphy, Sydney
Dance Company has built an extensive repertoire of original full evening
productions. With many years of international tour experience, the company
has more recently toured across the United States as well as to Mexico,
Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Singapore and the Peoples Republic
of China. Among the most in-demand touring productions during this period
has been Graeme Murphy's Free Radicals, an exuberant dance work which
showcases Australian contemporary music - in particular the work of composer
Michael Askill.
During 2000-2001, the Company toured again to the United
States and to Mexico, with Graeme Murphy's Salome and Air and other invisible
forces - two productions strikingly contrasted in mood and style, although
each featuring commissioned music by Michael Askill.
Sydney Dance Company will premiere Graeme Murphy's newest
work at the Sydney Opera House on May 7, 2002. The new work will see Murphy
working for the first time with Australian composer Matthew Hindson, in
conjunction with a design team which has worked together before (Air and
other invisible forces) - set designer Gerard Manion, costumier Akira
Isogawa and lighting designer Damien Cooper.
