ARTS QUEENSLAND ARTICLE FOR APAM GUIDE AND WEBSITE

Arts Queensland is the Queensland Government's department for arts and cultural development which is responsible for a range of funding programs, policy development and partnership initiatives.

Arts Queensland was elevated to a department in its own right a year ago and one of its major tasks has been to translate the aspirations of Government and the community into the first whole-of-Government cultural policy for Queensland.

Queensland is fast earning the reputation as a dynamic centre for arts and culture with the Government's significant investment in cultural infrastructure across the State. This investment is creating great potential for corporate partnerships and collaboration across all art forms in Queensland, around Australia and internationally.

The national-first Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts, which was unveiled in October 2001, is the first major project completed under the Queensland Government's $260 million Millennium Arts Project.

This exciting centre in inner-city Brisbane - which boasts a 200-seat performance space, rehearsal spaces, artists' residences and galleries - is home to seven leading arts organisations including Kooemba Jdarra Indigenous Performing Arts and Rock 'n' Roll Circus, both of which are featured in the Spotlight Productions.

The Millennium Arts Project also features the new Queensland Gallery of Modern Art, which will be the nation's largest gallery of its type when it opens in 2005; the redevelopment of the State Library of Queensland; an Indigenous Cultural Centre in inner-city Brisbane; and 16 projects throughout regional Queensland including a centre of contemporary arts in Cairns.

Arts Queensland is proud to showcase local talent and support Queensland arts organisations in attending and participating in the 2002 Australian Performing Arts Market and the Adelaide Fringe.

The Arts Queensland stand will feature information about Queensland's dynamic arts and cultural sector - including Spotlight productions The Secret Death of Salvador Dali (Strut & Fret Productions with La Boite Theatre), Yarnin' Up (Kooemba Jdarra Indigenous Performing Arts), Torture for Fun (The Happy Sideshow), Tango (Rock 'n' Roll Circus), and Airwaves (Topology & Loops).
