A small and extraordinarily beautiful island, Tasmania's inspiring environment has had an impact on the development of a unique cultural character. Its performing arts sector embraces many styles, drawing on diversity of talent and traditional theatrical forms. Expanding on these through experimentation and innovation, distinctive productions emerge from the island, from circus to site-specific work, for audiences of all ages. Arts Tasmania, the Tasmanian Government's arts agency is co-ordinating the Tasmanian presence at the 5th Australian Performing Arts Market. Tasmania's leading performing arts companies are represented at the Arts Tasmania On Display booth as well as in the Spotlight program. Arts Tasmania would like to invite you to its booth to meet with representatives and the Artistic Directors of Tasmanian companies. Arts Tasmania also is pleased to include Ten Days on the Island, Tasmania's premier cultural event.

Through extensive national and international touring the company has forged a solid reputation for the creation of exciting new works with high production standards. Terrapin has a diverse repertoire of touring productions. TasDance is a vibrant contemporary dance ensemble and has undertaken a number of national and international touring productions during its 21 year history. Under the artistic direction of Annie Greig, TasDance has commissioned work from renowned international and Australian choreographers. Graeme Murphy, Chrissie Parrot and Natalie Weir, each created a stylistically unique dance piece for Treasured Island, which premiered in the Ten Days on the Island Festival. Stompin Youth Company Inc is a leading Australian youth arts company. Underpinned by the philosophy that young people are valid creators in contemporary arts practice, Stompin celebrates the talents of young performers in high profile site specific performance events. Their latest production, Placement, reaches into the community linking a passionate youth statement about identity to the people and place of a specific location. Salamanca Theatre Company is dedicated to creating interdisciplinary work that is experimental and conceptually driven. It creates performance installations, new media works, contemporary performance, community public art and an annual program for theatre designed for schools touring. It is committed to producing work for young adults and providing opportunities for emerging artists to create and produce new works that embrace the diversity of contemporary practices. Raradada Circus Theatre is a new Tasmanian physical theatre company born from the National Circus Festivals. Combining contemporary circus with a commedia dell'arte performance style, Raradada really questions the ethical function of architecture. Loose Lips, first shown as part of part of Ten Days on the Island, is absurd theatre with an acrobatic ship of fools, clowns on mythical quests, unlikely musicians and the madcap spectacle of a not so bon voyage. Osborne and O'Neile was formed in 1997 by Launceston-based performing artists Jonathan Rees-Osborne & David O'Neile. Their debut dance-theatre work, Lovely Lovely Days, (see SPOTLIGHT) has sold out two seasons, most recently during the Ten Days on the Island Festival. Lovely Lovely Days follows the adventures of two nameless, timeless and cartoon-like characters from somewhere East of West on an eccentric journey of self-discovery. Mixed Media Productions is driven by two highly experienced
performers, writers and directors, Heidi Callewaert and Thomas Zotz. Experimenting
with the interaction between objects and movement and sound, the company
produces puppet-based theatre works for an international audience. Since
1992 the company has toured Europe performing at major international festivals
and venues captivating audiences with their performances for both adults
and children. IHOS Opera is nationally renowned for large scale experimental operas in warehouses, using mixed media, cross-cultural influences and spectacular effects. IHOS Opera's striking contemporary operas blend voice, dance, sound, installation art and digital technology. Many works are also suitable for staging in a traditional venue. IHOS is currently developing a large scale piece based on the life of Nikola Tesla for staging in 2003. www.ihosopera.com (online March 2002) The Australian Script Centre is a national arts organisation
playing a key role in maintaining and enhancing the vigour of Australian
theatre. It is the lead agency for the collection, distribution and promotion
of Australia's contemporary writers for theatre. Each year a national
reading group selects 30 Australian writers to profile in its annual Collections
publication. The Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra is acclaimed as one of the world's finest small orchestras. It is based at Federation Concert Hall on the Hobart waterfront where it presents exciting and diverse annual concert seasons as well as performances around the State. The TSO has an expanding schedule of national and international touring and recordings for CD, film and television. Ten Days on the Island burst onto the cultural scene in 2001 with a unique celebration of island culture and firmly established itself as Tasmania's premier cultural event it its inaugural year. With Artistic Advisor, Robyn Archer again at the helm, the 2003 event promises to be an equally exciting Statewide celebration of the arts. Don't miss it, 28 March - 6 April, 2003. |
