underwhere is an outdoor performance that emerges from a Telstra (telecommunications) manhole pit in the street. An inspiring one-woman show that gives the audience a private and intimate experience in the midst of a busy city.

In seeking a memory lost to her, a woman revisits the same corner every night where as a six year-old a tragedy occurred. Eventually she becomes entranced by the rhythms of the street and it "undresses" for her. The manhole lid she's been standing on, opens. The urban underworld is revealed. Her inner world unravels.

Real, surreal and fantastical objects emerge from under the pavement. A ladder is constructed, leading high above the audience's heads. She draws energy from the pipes and cables to make a virtual home at the top, and boils a kettle for a cup of tea.

Her actions trigger lights to switch on, taps pour, gas ignites and telephones ring, all causing ripples under the surface - for both the street and herself.

The tragic story becomes transcendent.

underwhere premiered in Hobart, Tasmania in 2007 to great acclaim.

Devised and directed by Lucy Wilson with writer Willoh S. Weiland, choreographer Teresa Blake, composition and sound design Matthew Dewey, set construction design Joey Ruigrok van der Werven, prop design Bruce Hay, lighting Marianne Taylor, costume Hanna Parssinen and performer Jannah Skye Partington.
