Vula, directed by Nina Nawalowalo, was first produced in 2002 and premiered at Bats Theatre, Wellington, as part of the 'Dance Your Socks Off' festival. Its first presentation was greeted with huge critical acclaim and a completely sold out season. From there, Vula has been on a five year journey alternating between phases of touring and development. In 2004 Vula was selected to represent Aotearoa, New Zealand at the 9th Pacific Arts Festival ­in Pelau.

Vula has now played eight national and international festivals including The Lake Taupo Arts Festival, Christchurch and Auckland international Arts festivals and the Charter Day Festival in Guam, Micronesia. In 2006 Vula was presented for a three week season at the Sydney Opera House as well as touring to both Fiji and Auckland.

In 2008 Vula will be performed in a ten night season at The Barbican Centre, London, as part of the prestigious BITE festival, followed by an extensive tour of Holland and Belgium as part of the World Music Theatre Festival.

The Conch
The Conch was founded in Wellington, Aotearoa (New Zealand) in 2002 by Artistic Director Nina Nawalowalo and Associate Director Tom McCrory. It is driven by the desire to create ground-breaking works of Pacific Island theatre of the highest international production values. The company's mission is to serve as a vehicle for the development of an entirely new theatrical language capable of expressing and advancing the core values of Pacific Island people to a broad theatre audience.
