Strange Fruit presents Absolute Pearl - a contemplation celebrating the passage from this earthly realm to the next.

The performers enter the arena with an intensity that implies an impending sense of action. As though compelled through memory or instinct they ascend the poles, entering an interface between mortal and immortal realms. Having entered this dimension, they begin to establish a physical distinctiveness that references abstract fragments of time, place, space, identity and relationship, building through complex choreographic sequencing an inevitable sense of escalation. Then, as though expecting to be flung into the skies in an act of finality, they begin to descend. We are left with one performer, racing the horizon, eternally caught in an oscillating, quivering dance of eternity.

Absolute Pearl draws the audience into a dreamlike dimension where memories and actions surface and dissipate in an eternal swirling carnival of the air. It is a challenging work that creates a direct visceral connection with the viewer. Using Strange Fruit's unique 4.5 metre sway-poles and designed to be performed outdoors, it is accessible to large and varied audiences, creating momentarily for them a spectacular fleeting vision against a familiar backdrop. This allows the work to transcend cultural differences and create a unique and accessible experience.

Strange Fruit
Strange Fruit is a Melbourne-based performing arts company that produces and performs a remarkable style of work that fuses theatre, dance and circus. Perched atop 4.5 metre high flexible poles of original design, the company delivers spectacular works that can entertain audiences numbering thousands. The poles' extreme strength and flexibility allow the performers to bow to impossible angles, swaying back and forth in a hypnotising dance as the audience looks up in wonder.

Since its premier at the Melbourne International Festival of the Arts in 1994, the company has established itself as one of Australia's iconic outdoor theatre companies. Their image can be seen on websites, festival posters, brochures, journals and reports all over the world. Strange Fruit has performed to well over a million people in more than 45 countries and have appeared at over 300 international festivals and events, including 75 within Australia.

Awards include: The National Myer Performing Arts Award (1999); Silver Trophy at the Daidogei World Cup, Japan (1999 and 2000); The Premio Del Publico Award, Valladolid, Spain (2003) and The Victorian Export Award (2006).

2007 saw the company touring simultaneously in both Europe and North America, performing in 26 countries, including India and mainland China for the first time. In Helsinki a crowd of 70,000 saw the city grid-locked and the public transport system shut down! The company's first ever performance in New York in July made front page news and festive spirits flew through Covent Garden in London and around the Malaysian Eye in Kuala Lumpur, much to the astonishment of Xmas shoppers! Strange Fruit has just returned from a prestigious showcase at Betsy Streb's studio in New York where Absolute Pearl was picked up for American touring in 2008 and 2009.
