dance piece.
Sydney Morning Herald, 2007 Structure and Sadness is a dance piece which bases its unique movement vocabulary on the engineering principles of compression, suspension, torsion and failure. The 1970 collapse of the West Gate Bridge in Melbourne, Australia saw 35 men lose their lives when a span came down during its construction. Lucy Guerin uses this tragic event as a starting point to Structure and Sadness. Structure and Sadness examines the bridge as a supporting and connecting structure. Its concrete and definable form contrasts with the unknowable grief and chaos brought about by its failure. On stage, the performers construct a precarious world teetering on the point of collapse. The work shifts between practical building of supportive structures and the impressionistic portrayal of disintegration and sorrow. Structure and Sadness is a complex dance work, which examines the impressionable human body contending with the unyielding inanimate world that surrounds it. It explores an event in recent history not as a factual narrative, but as a physical, emotional and visual response to a devastating accident. Lucy Guerin Inc Lucy Guerin Inc is a Melbourne based contemporary dance company committed to developing and touring new dance works. Guerin's work is known for its high level of detail and for its ability to synthesize the conceptual and the physical. Recent works include Love Me, Aether and Structure and Sadness. Lucy Guerin trained in Adelaide at the Centre for Performing Arts and worked as a dancer with Dance Exchange and Dance Works. In 1989 she went to New York where she spent seven years studying, performing and choreographing in the downtown dance scene. In 1996 she moved to Melbourne to focus on choreography and formed Lucy Guerin Inc in 2002. Contact:
